When locals first began bathing in the Blue Lagoon’s milky-blue waters, they noticed something remarkable: the silica mud that soothed their skin was streaked with vivid blue-green microalgae — organisms capable of thriving in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

In 1994, the Blue Lagoon Medical Clinic opened, offering natural psoriasis treatments and marking a pivotal step in harnessing the lagoon’s healing powers. By 1995, silica-rich mud became the foundation of Blue Lagoon Skin Science. Over time, this expanded into two distinct product lines: dermatological formulas designed for sensitive skin and chronic conditions and spa wellness products created to bring the rejuvenating Blue Lagoon experience into the home.

A decade later, a team of scientists discovered that when silica and microalgae work together, they don’t just calm the skin — they actively help prevent premature ageing and strengthen the skin barrier. This groundbreaking research led to the creation of BL+ COMPLEX, the signature ingredient at the heart of our award-winning BL+ Skincare line.

What is BL+ COMPLEX?

The culmination of 30 years of research, BL+ COMPLEX is a proprietary ingredient technology that unites patented Blue Lagoon Microalgae and Blue Lagoon Silica — two bioactives found in the Blue Lagoon’s unique geothermal seawater. Combined with an innovative delivery system, the complex penetrates deeply into the skin to work at the cellular level, leaving it firmer, healthier, and more radiant.

"The blue-green microalgae discovered in the Blue Lagoon is very unique in that it does not thrive in many other places in the world," says Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, Blue Lagoon’s Director of Research and Development, who has been studying the Lagoon’s microorganisms since the first laboratory was established in 1993.

What Does It Do for Skin?

   As we age, collagen production slows, leading to a loss of firmness and elasticity. BL+ COMPLEX stimulates collagen genes (COL1A1 and COL1A2), boosting synthesis and helping restore skin’s strength, elasticity, and smoothness.
   
   
2. Prevents UV-Induced Collagen Breakdown
   
   UV radiation triggers collagen-destroying enzymes (MMP-1), accelerating wrinkles and sagging. BL+ COMPLEX significantly inhibits MMP-1, protecting collagen fibres and preserving firmness.
   
   
3. Combats Oxidative Stress
   
   Free radicals from UV, pollution, and stress cause oxidative damage that accelerates skin ageing. Rich in antioxidants — including polyphenols and vitamin E — Blue Lagoon Microalgae neutralises free radicals and helps shield skin from oxidative stress.
   
   
4. Improves Barrier Function
   
   A strong skin barrier is essential for defence against aggressors and for moisture retention. BL+ COMPLEX stimulates the proteins (involucrin, filaggrin, transglutaminase-1) that drive keratinocyte differentiation, fortifying the skin barrier and enhancing resilience.
